Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a renowned scholar, great visionary and founder of the Indian Statistical Institute was born on 29th June, 1893. After obtaining ‘Tripos’ in Mathematics and Natural Sciences from King’s College, Cambridge, he joined Presidency College, Calcutta as a faculty. He was instrumental in the construction of Hirakud Dam in Odisha and the Durgapur Barrage in West Bengal, both based on his systematic statistical studies on rainfall and floods in eastern India. In 1945, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, London. He established National Sample Survey which subsequently became a separate organization of the Government of India. He also helped in setting up Central Statistical Organization and introduced the concept of statistical quality control in India. Prof. Mahalanobis, the architect of the Second Five Year Plan, was awarded Padma Vibushan in 1968.
