The Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Mother Teresa was an icon of God’s tender mercy. Born on 26th August,1910 in Skopje, Macedonia, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu came to India as Sister of Loreto in 1929 and served there as a teacher and principal. She found herself alone on the streets of Calcutta as she experienced a strong feeling of loss and almost of fear that was difficult to overcome. To the calling of God, she surrendered herself to the service of humanity , as she left her teaching at Lorento School to establish the Missionaries of Charity. Seeing the miseries of terminally sick patients, she started "Nirmal Hriday", where homeless, dying individuals were washed, given food, and allowed to die with dignity. She was truly the embodiment of the word ‘Mother’ in its fullest, truest and complete sense. She was awarded Pope John XXIII peace prize, Nehru prize for international peace, Balzan prize and Templeton , Magsaysay awards, Nobel Peace Prize’ in 1979 and “Bharat Ratna” in 1980. Mother Teresa is now a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church after beatification by Pope John Paul II in 2003.
